University Of Jos Shuts Down Indefinitely (See Why)

The University of Jos has been shut down after a protest by students over hike in fees turned violent. The protest started yesterday morning with students holding university administrators hostage in their offices.

Security officials where later called in today when  the protest continued to calm the situation. But a soldier attached to the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis (STF), instead of calming the situation opened fire on protesters leaving at least 8 students with gun wounds including a blind one.

The University Registrar, Jully Dandam, after a hurriedly convened management meeting, announced the institution will remain closed till further notice.

The school management also ordered all students to vacate the campus before 2 p.m. today as a way of halting the violence and stopping the crisis from spreading to other parts of the state.

None of the students has died, but are presently receiving treatment. The Special Taskforce (STF) spokesperson has however denied a soldier with them shot the wounded students, but confirmed they had gun wounds, but might be from other security officers invited by the school management.
